Alfred Publishing has just put out a new book by Pete Sweeny called Drummer’s Guide to Fills. The publisher says:
Pete Sweeney’s Drummer’s Guide to Fills is designed to expand drumming vocabulary by teaching drummers not just how to play fills, but when and where to play them. The book offers a step-by-step approach to playing fills of varying lengths, as well as different approaches to resolving fills and returning to the groove. Drummer’s Guide to Fills features fills all drummers can use to add excitement to different sections of a song and even use as the building blocks of a solo. Drummers can learn fills in many styles, from rock to funk to jazz, plus a “melodic” approach to fills that allows further embellishment on basics. The included CD accents the book by demonstrating all of the musical examples.
The book retails for $19.95. Dang .. now I need to get MY book on fills out there!

You ever have the moment when you know for a fact that the days of carelessly living through life were over, and you realized you’re all grown up? Well, I just arrived at that point today. Today, my own personal rubber stamp came in. The stamp simply states, “From the Library of Dave Kropf.” Why is this such a big deal? (more…)

I just picked up my very own copy of Jim Chapin’s Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer. This book, just like Stone’s Stick Control, is one of the true monuments in percussion methods, but I can’t believe it’s taken 20 years to finally own a personal copy. It’s one of things that my instructors or peers always had ready and I would copy certain pages to work on a particular exercise or etude. The book always seemed manageable by looking at one or two pages at a time, but now that I have a full copy, I’m truly astounded at how much knowledge and expertise is crammed into so relatively few pages.
