Clive Burr, former drummer for Iron Maiden, died in his sleep Tuesday at the age of 56. For years before his death, Burr battled multiple sclerosis.
Burr joined the pioneering band in 1979, just before the release of their self-titled debut album. The title track has a place in MTV history as one of the music videos aired the day the channel launched on August 1, 1981. In a statement on the Iron Maiden website Wednesday (March 13), band founder Steve Harris said, “This is terribly sad news. Clive was a very old friend of all of us. He was a wonderful person and an amazing drummer who made a valuable contribution to Maiden in the early days when we were starting out.”
