Hey y’all. We’ll have a fresh show this week with Carter flying solo again. I’ll go live at 1:30 pm Central Standard Time. The video feed didn’t agree with me last time so I’ll see if I can get it running this time. Definitely will have a chat room. Topic will be The Right Cymbal For The Job. We’ve discussed cymbals AT LENGTH before on the show, but this particular topic will deal with that sounds are typically used in various styles. I’ll be rockin some news, an album review, plus Jose Pasillas of Incubus as Drummer of the Week. And of course, I’ll have a rant or two cued up about some inanne sports subject. So tune in Friday afternoon for another awesome show!

My love of all things Dave Matthews Band has been discussed much on the show, so here goes again. Hulu.com has a video providing an interesting look behind the scenes of the writing and recording of their new album Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King. Lots of very interesting tidbits in this video, including shots of the band using legit charts, engineer Doug McKean’s thoughts on drum sounds, and the band’s thoughts on the passing of saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who died during the recording. Also, at one point you see drummer Carter Beauford go for it in the studio (8:02 minute mark). I’ve picked up the album, and I must say it’s pretty great. Definitely a solid effort from a band who’s entering their third decade of existence.
Check out the video here!

Got a cool heads up from Jim Pettit, owner of Memphis Drum Shop (aka The Best Drum Shop on the Face of the Planet) today. For all those in the Memphis area tomorrow the good folks from Roland USA will be in store for free one-on-one lessons and small group lessons on any Roland product. Basically, if you’ve got a piece of Roland equipment that maybe you don’t know how to get the most out of it or have a question, come on down and they’ll help you in person with the gear. Gotta love Memphis Drum Shop. They always go that extra mile for their customers.

I should note that for this review that I have neither Advanced Funk Studies nor the Contemporary Drum-Set Techniques books themselves but given the information in this DVD I will soon. Rick Latham wrote those two books over twenty-five years ago and they’ve become favorites of the drumming community over that time. At some point along the way Rick decided to supplement the books with a video for each book respectively. Fast forward to today, for the 25th anniversary of Advanced Funk Studies Rick rereleased both of the DVDs together in a single disk with a bunch of extras and it made its way to my house via Netflix… and that’s the story so far.

Now THIS is cool. As part of their 100th anniversary celebrations, Ludwig is releasing a gorgeous stainless steel kit. Every kit will be fashioned by Ronn Dunnett, owner of Dunnett Classic Drums, who knows a thing or two about making metal drums. Too bad they’re only making 100 of them. I’d love to get one.
