This makes me drool. Taye’s unveiling a new finish for their BeBop kits. This classic walnut finish is seriously mouth-watering. Maybe it’s because I’ve been playing and listening to a lot of jazz recently, but my favorite part of this kit besides the finish is the 18″x14″ kick drum. Looks marvelous. Bet it sounds great too! Always been impressed with how Taye’s kits sound. They do great work.
Good things come in groups, I guess. Flipside Memphis, which is a series of videos about local Memphis music and such that MTV has recently put out, put together a short video about the Memphis Drum Shop. I know we’ve talked about our love for MDS ad nauseum on the show, but I think this video really sums it up. AND, the main narrator is my own instructor, Renardo Ward. Pretty cool. Check it out. Links to the Flipside Memphis site can be found after the jump.
Great news for Jim Petit and the guys at the Memphis Drum Shop! Music Inc. Magazine has named MDS as it’s 2008 Independent Retailer of the Year and ran a long feature article on owner/founder Jim Petit in a recent issue. VERY interesting read. You can download the article itself from the magazine’s website here. Check the links below for more info on Memphis Drum Shop or Music Inc. Congrats to MDS! Best Drum Shop in the world!
Benny Greb’s new DVD is somewhere between Big Time and the Thomas Lang DVDs. To me this makes sense because I tend to think of Benny Greb’s drumming style as a blend of those two drummers. Thomas Langesq chops with a Billy Ward like sense of creativity. In this DVD Benny Greb teaches you how to “speak drum” There isn’t anything revolutionary in terms of what he’s teaching, it’s how he’s teaching it that is the real selling point. This isn’t one huge system it’s actually 3 or 4 smaller ones that he’s teaching you by relating them to something very intuitive to humans, language.
We talk all about cases on this week’s show! Carter brings the news (including a disgusting Joey Jordison story), Keith Moon is the drummer of the week, and the Cheese-pata-flafla is the hybrid rudiment of the week. Show Notes
The 5th Annual Drummer Cafe Community Drum Solo video has been uploaded to Drummercafe.com. There are some familiar faces from last year and a wide interpretation of this year’s loop. There’s even one guy doing a Dave Grohl and playing on a toy set! I’m still frustrated that I wasn’t able to make time to contribute a video this year but hey, hopefully next year! Click the picture to see the video.
Carter flies solo this week as Dave is MIA! Plenty of news including and upcoming Zoro clinic and a famous drummer auditions for the Smashing Pumpkins. Larry Mullen Jr. is the drummer of the week and Carter teaches some music theory basics! Plus… an NFL diatribe. Originally recorded April 29. 2009.
In a nod to taking himself seriously, Slipknot’s Joey Jordison has left Ahead drumsticks for Pro-Mark. Whether you’re a Vic Firth, Pro-Mark, Zildjian, Vater, etc… I think we can all agree that Pro-Mark’s a step… well… ahead… of Ahead sticks.
Maybe I’m all alone in this but before I picked up this DVD I had no idea who Chris Layton was. Maybe that’s a forgivable offense but I also didn’t know who Stevie Ray Vaughan was either. So if you do know who Stevie Ray Vaughan was then placing Chris Layton in your mind will be easy. He was Stevie’s drummer in Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Double Trouble band, making him either the double or the trouble. I’m not sure which. (more…)
Interesting clip here. This shows a few guys demonstrating the visual effects seen when performing with Vic Firth’s LED Lite Stix. The sticks, which have a colored LED light on the beads, are a total gimmick, but some of these look cool. However… can anyone explain to me why Vinny Appice appears to be in a bathroom towards the end of the video?
Hey folks. We’ll be pushing a new episode of Drummer Talk down the podcast feed tube Friday for you guys. However, due to busy graduation schedules, we won’t be able to do a live show this week. We’ll pick up the live podcast next week though. In the meantime, enjoy the show I flew solo with a couple weeks ago! Thanks!
For the upcoming tour with his new supergroup, Chickenfoot, Chad Smith is pulling out all the stops. He’s been known to go over the top in kit design before, a couple times. This time around is no exception. Smith’s teamed up with Orange County Chopper motorcycle artist Nub. No… that’s really his name. The kit looks pretty flippin’ sweet. Not a bad design. Check it our here.
The fellas at Drummer Talk are now all up on Twitter at www.twitter.com/drummertalk. We’ll post updates, show times, and totally random things here so check it out and follow us!
Latin music is something that isn’t often covered in depth in most drum instructional videos. There are a lot of books on the subject but for some reason they don’t seem to have attempted to seriously cover this topic in a video. Well, Phil Maturano has filled that gap with this DVD. Like with pretty much every other DVD I’ve reviewed, depending on which description you read (there’s a million of them) you’ll come away with very different ideas of what this DVD is supposed to offer. I’ve seen descriptions pretty much saying that not only will you be able to play latin music like a pro, you’ll also be able to speak fluent Spanish and make a mean Paella. (more…)
This week, we talk all about how to market yourself as a working musician! Marco Minnemann is the drummer of the week, Carter brings the news, and the Flow Five is the hybrid rudiment of the week! Show Notes
The video feed is below, but it konks out with about 10 mins left, so our apologies!
