Tomas Haake Injured Again, Band Cancels Shows

April 17, 2009 in Artists, News by Carter

Sign Meshuggah drummer Tomas Haake for a pro sports contract. He can’t stay healthy! The Swedish band announced this month that they are cancelling several Scandinavian shows due Haake’s unhealthy back and right leg. Haake was forced to sit out part of Meshuggah’s tour last year due to shoulder problems. At this point, one wonders why this keeps happening. Suppose it’s due to poor posture or technique? It is possible. Perhaps he’s just chronically injured. At any rate, Meshuggah should at least be discussing what to do about this recent development as it relates to the band’s future. Cancelling shows or finding a replacement drummer once a year doesn’t seem like viable option for a successful band like Meshuggah.

DVD Review – Mike Terrana: Rhythm Beast

April 15, 2009 in Music/DVDs, News, Reviews by JABB

I’ve just been striking out with a vengeance on my recent Netflix picks for drum reviews and  this is strike 3… good thing I’m not playing baseball. Mike Terrana’s Rhythm Beast is very similar to Ian Paice’s DVD that I reviewed previously in that there was some confusion as to what I was getting into when I read the description. The description led me to believe that this was a performance/instruction just like the description of Ian Paice’s DVD led me to believe it was a regular instructional. I was wrong then and I’m wrong again this time.

Groove Essentials Youtube Channel

April 15, 2009 in Artists, Education, Videos by Carter

So while searching for a story for today, I stumbled across the Hudson Music Youtube channel and found a whole channel for Tommy Igoe’s Groove Essentials 2 DVD. This particular clip popped out to me. It’s about rideless grooves and how to use them. I found it incredibly useful. Same ole Tommy. However, I noticed he’s using Evans heads now where he was using Remo before. Enjoy!

DVD Review – Ian Paice: Not for the Pros

April 10, 2009 in Music/DVDs, Opinion, Reviews by JABB

I expected this to be a straight up instructional video like pretty much every other DVD i’ve reviewed. Usually for me that means trying to glean a couple new and useful thing out of a mass of stuff that I already know or is inferior to what I know. You can only watch so many of these things before you start to feel like a know-it-all. Well, Not for the Pros isn’t really an instructional as much as it is a mainline injection of Ian Paice (not even a very big one at that). This vid is somewhere between a factory tour, an instructional, and a concert vid. It’s very loosely held together by a single thread, and that thread is Ian. Read the rest of this entry →

311′s Chad Sexton Switches to Pearl

April 10, 2009 in Artists, News by Carter

In a victory for drumming purists everywhere, Pearl has announced that 311′s Chad Sexton has left his former company (Orange County Drums and Percussion) for greener pastures. Having endorsed Pearl’s hardware for awhile, he finally saw the light and wisely left ODCP. No brainer to me. Go Chad!
