By applying drum shell-making properties refined over a century, Ludwig’s flagship professional drum line is going to the next level. In our 100th Anniversary year, Ludwig is introducing the new Legacy Exotic, a stunning rethink to a modern classic.
After locating several felled logs from Africa and Australia, three exotic hardwoods made the final cut because of their visual elegance and tonal quality: Sumauma, Lacewood, and Black Limba. Ludwig has combined these woods with inner and outer plys of North American Maple and traditional single 1/8″ thick Poplar core ply that creates a rich sonic warmth to the Legacy’s shell and moves it into a new tonal spectrum. Legacy’s trademark rounded bearing edge creates a perfect compliment to the 1/4″ single-ply Maple reinforcement rings. Throughout 2009, four finishes in each of these woods will be introduced. These inaugural Legacy Exotic kits will be in limited supply, making them the perfect addition to Ludwig’s illustrious vintage tradition.

Now THIS is cool. As part of their 100th anniversary celebrations, Ludwig is releasing a gorgeous stainless steel kit. Every kit will be fashioned by Ronn Dunnett, owner of Dunnett Classic Drums, who knows a thing or two about making metal drums. Too bad they're only making 100 of them. I'd love to get one.

He has a complete Pro Tools HD3 rig, mic'd up kit, and iso room in his garage! Personally, I'm frothing with jealousy. It's one of my dreams to have a working home studio. Good things in the works from our friends at Taye (pronounced TIE). Their new Studio Birch kit looks amazing. Taye makes great drums. I remember being very impressed with Jim Payne's Taye kit at PASIC 2006. What I think is interesting is that they have several different bass drum sizes. 24" x 16" would be awesome!

I wish they’d come up with a better badge. These oval shaped things are getting pretty stale.
My son and I got to play around on one of the lacquer Legacy kits at Sam Ashe in Raleigh, NC. GREAT sounding drums!! VERY LOUD with minimal input and they SOUND LIKE 1960s LUDWIGS! The kit was tuned for rock/metal (a bit lower pitched than I would prefer…the 18″ floor tom was almost subsonic). There were two other high-end kits on the floor (one by the major Japanese label…the other by the vaunted U.S. manufacturer whose shells are “individually pitch-matched and marked”) and the Ludwigs could absolutely convince you that they were worth every penny of the $3500+ price. They would also convince you that the two other high-end kits on the floor should only cost half as much!
WAY TO GO, LUDWIG!
