Back when the Pearl Reference (cue the accordian) kit was released, we on Drummer Talk surmised that it was not a viable option for the gigging/touring drummer solely because of the sheer weight of the drums and hardware. Well… three and a half years later, Pearl has put it’s money where it’s mouth is and proved us wrong. Kinda… Check out how after the jump.
Proving that the Memphis Drum Shop is a top notch and high caliber establishment, a couple of the drumming community’s up and coming players dropped by recently and showcased some of their talent. Ronald Bruner Jr. (Stanley Clark) and Jason McGerr (Death Cab For Cutie) both sat down at the kit in MDS’s cymbal vault (which houses the largest Zildjian collection in the world outside of the Zildjian factory itself) and gave viewers a tiny showcase.
It’s interesting to see the difference in styles between the two guys. Ronald is very flashy and all about the speed while Jason is very methodical and has a more calm, cool, and collected vibe. Love both of their playing.
There was a time in Terry Bozzio’s history where he wasn’t the king of huge drumsets… he was king of big hair. This video is a record of how he approached his drum solos at that time. His solos back then are very similar to his solos these days but he used a much smaller kit back then, only five toms a snare and two bass drums… tiny. His solos are long orchestral inspired pieces that I just don’t particularly care for. (more…)
Alfred Publishing’s pulling out the big guns this time. With the release of their “Drum Atlas” series of books, drummers can now find a book on specific countries and the rhythms found in those countries. Seems like a pretty cool idea to me. Although… I wonder why they chose India, Brazil, Cuba, and… Salsa… Salsa’s not a country. Although I could go for some chips and salsa right now.
You’re never too famous to audition. At least that was the mentality former System of A Down drummer John Dolmayan took with him to audition for The Smashing Pumpkins. Pumpkins frontman/genius Billy Corgan recently auditioned 12 drummers for the spot left open when founding member Jimmy Chamberlin departed in March. Dolmayan would certainly be an interesting fit for the Chicago-based rock group. He’s certainly proved his chops during his 12 year run with System of A Down. Today, we talk about rekindling the passion for playing. Dave unveils the 2009 Drummer Talk fundraiser, Carter brings the news, and we take your live calls! Show Notes
Sign Meshuggah drummer Tomas Haake for a pro sports contract. He can’t stay healthy! The Swedish band announced this month that they are cancelling several Scandinavian shows due Haake’s unhealthy back and right leg. Haake was forced to sit out part of Meshuggah’s tour last year due to shoulder problems. At this point, one wonders why this keeps happening. Suppose it’s due to poor posture or technique? It is possible. Perhaps he’s just chronically injured. At any rate, Meshuggah should at least be discussing what to do about this recent development as it relates to the band’s future. Cancelling shows or finding a replacement drummer once a year doesn’t seem like viable option for a successful band like Meshuggah.
I’ve just been striking out with a vengeance on my recent Netflix picks for drum reviews and this is strike 3… good thing I’m not playing baseball. Mike Terrana’s Rhythm Beast is very similar to Ian Paice’s DVD that I reviewed previously in that there was some confusion as to what I was getting into when I read the description. The description led me to believe that this was a performance/instruction just like the description of Ian Paice’s DVD led me to believe it was a regular instructional. I was wrong then and I’m wrong again this time. (more…)
So while searching for a story for today, I stumbled across the Hudson Music Youtube channel and found a whole channel for Tommy Igoe’s Groove Essentials 2 DVD. This particular clip popped out to me. It’s about rideless grooves and how to use them. I found it incredibly useful. Same ole Tommy. However, I noticed he’s using Evans heads now where he was using Remo before. Enjoy!
Ludwig is giving us another beautiful kit to oogle over. The new Legacy Exotic kits seems like they would look great on stage or in the studio. But the question is, how does it sound?
Our good friends at Drummercafe.com have fired up a yearly tradition again. For the fifth straight year, site founder Bart Elliott is organizing a community drum solo. I’ll let Bart explain the details on the site. I think this is a great idea. I know I’ll personally be submitting a video. If you have the capabilities and are a Drummercafe.com member, go ahead and join the solo! Click the picture to see all the rules and how to get involved.
I expected this to be a straight up instructional video like pretty much every other DVD i’ve reviewed. Usually for me that means trying to glean a couple new and useful thing out of a mass of stuff that I already know or is inferior to what I know. You can only watch so many of these things before you start to feel like a know-it-all. Well, Not for the Pros isn’t really an instructional as much as it is a mainline injection of Ian Paice (not even a very big one at that). This vid is somewhere between a factory tour, an instructional, and a concert vid. It’s very loosely held together by a single thread, and that thread is Ian. (more…)
In a victory for drumming purists everywhere, Pearl has announced that 311’s Chad Sexton has left his former company (Orange County Drums and Percussion) for greener pastures. Having endorsed Pearl’s hardware for awhile, he finally saw the light and wisely left ODCP. No brainer to me. Go Chad!
Drum stick tycoon and legendary Boston Symphony timpanist was recently featured on CBS’ Sunday Morning Show. It’s a pretty good read as long as you ignore all the drummer puns.
