DVD Review – Tris Imboden: Latin Rock for Caucasians

March 22, 2009 in News by JABB

latin     Ok… I think I need to clear this up before I start the review. No, this video doesn’t actually have the word Caucasians in the title. The word is actually a spanish epithet for caucasians. It starts with a “G” ends in an “S” and the middle part is the first name of the Beatles’ second drummer. If you can’t piece that one together then you probably aren’t old enough to know it anyway. The title doesn’t particularly bother me but this website has standards and so I employed a little creative editing (AKA censorship.)

All About Jazz – Three Views of Peter Erskine

March 20, 2009 in Artists, Books/Mags/Web, Videos by Dave Kropf

The folks over at All About Jazz have posted up a good mix of three Erskine clips.

Source: All About Jazz

The first clip shows Erskine playing a more-or-less free form drum solo. It was recorded in 2004 at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC). The second video, down below, features the drummer in a trio with guitarist John Abercrombie and bassist Marc Johnson, recorded at NYC’s Village Vanguard. Lastly, the third clip provides a glimpse of Erskine the teacher, as he demonstrates a New Orleans-style groove and solo.

First All-Female Drumline

March 19, 2009 in Education, News by Dave Kropf

Finally, some sisters get some drumline love!  Girl Scout Troupe 6087 in Allentown, PA have formed the nation’s first all-girl drumline and are getting ready to take on indoor competition.

Calling themselves the Percussion Patrol, the cookie-slingers get together every Sunday and sling grooves under the direction of Don Amig.  It’s about time they show those all-male corps that the gender gap swings both ways.

They are still accepting members, so if you’re a girl age 14-18 in the Allentown, PA area, call 610-349-7251 or e-mail percworx@ptd.net.

John Dolmayan Buys Rare Superman Comic

March 18, 2009 in Artists, News, Randomness by Dave Kropf

Remember a while back there was this big to-do about a rare, first edition Superman Comic that was for sale?  No?  Well it seems that it caught the attention of System of a Down drummer, John Dolmayan, who picked up the auctioned comic for a cool $317k.  The price paid in 1938 for the original?  10 Cents.

Turns out, Dolmayan is a pretty big rare comic dealer and bought the comic for a client.  Hmmm … maybe it’s Charlie Benante!

New Rock Band Featuring Beatles To Be Released

March 17, 2009 in Artists, News, Randomness by Carter

Finally! A Rock Band game worth mentioning! The Beatles music will be featured on The Beatles: Rock Band, to be released this fall! To me it seems as if putting their music on Rock Band would be beneath the Fab Four (or whomever holds their copyrights now). Apparently I am wrong! One wonders what Ringo could have to say about this…
