Cindy Blackman Clinic Pictoral From Drumsmith.com

In another masterstroke, photographer/drum luthier/webmaster Ronn Dunnett of Drumsmith.com took a trip to Cindy Blackman’s clinic in Vancouver, Canada a couple years back. He brought his camera. What resulted is nothing short of mastery. There’s really nothing more I can say. Just enjoy.

Meinl Introduces Another Gimmick

Come on, Meinl. First the drum mat boondoggle, now you’re telling us you’ve created a “Extra Dry Studio Tambourine.” Seriously. What exactly makes this tambourine all that different from any of it’s counterparts? I mean, seriously. We’re not idiots.

Funk Brother Uriel Jones Dies at 74

We’ve lost another legend. Sad day indeed in the drum community. Funk Brother Uriel Jones (name a Motown artist, he played on their record) passed away due to complications stemming from heart surgery. The Funk Brothers were Motown’s house band. A group of guys that together played on more #1 records than anyone in history. These guys were literally the driving force for popular American music in 50s and 60s. So few of the core guys remain. Sad to see Jones go.

Meinl Puts Out A Gimmick

File this under the “Never buy this unless at gunpoint” section. Meinl, in a flail of a money grab, is pushing their new Drum Rug… in zebra print. The starting price… wait for it. Wait for it… $130.00. No, that was not a joke. Meinl is trying to tell you that you need to spend ONE HUNDRED THIRTY DOLLARS on a drum mat, excuse me… ZEBRA PRINTED drum mat when Lowe’s sells the same thing (minus the obnoxious zebra print) for $15!!! Ugh… drives me insane.

Roland Starts Shipping TD-4S V-Kit

As we’ve discussed at length on the show, electronic drums will never (say it with me) never replace acoustic drums in terms of feel and overall sound. That said, Roland’s new TD-4S V-Kit is really nice. I’m usually not a fan of rubber pads on electronic kits, but this one looks pretty good. Simpler, more streamlined stands, easier cable-wrangling. I’m sold. Check out the demo video Johnny Rabb (Friend of The Show) did at this past Winter NAMM in Anaheim. Roland’s started shipping these monsters. MSRP looks to be in $1,200 range.

Ludwig Presents the Liverpool 4 Drum Kit

If you’re in the mood for some vintage gear, or gear that certainly appears vintage, this will be right up your alley. Ludwig has announced they are adding onto their Legacy line with a rendition of the kit Ringo Starr played on The Beatles’ groundbreaking Ed Sullivan Show appearance in 1964. Looks pretty nice to me. The only real news here is that Ludwig is releasing the Black Oyster Pearl finish with the Legacy line. I’m not gonna break the bank to get this kit, though.

DVD Review – Tris Imboden: Latin Rock for Caucasians

latin     Ok… I think I need to clear this up before I start the review. No, this video doesn’t actually have the word Caucasians in the title. The word is actually a spanish epithet for caucasians. It starts with a “G” ends in an “S” and the middle part is the first name of the Beatles’ second drummer. If you can’t piece that one together then you probably aren’t old enough to know it anyway. The title doesn’t particularly bother me but this website has standards and so I employed a little creative editing (AKA censorship.)

All About Jazz – Three Views of Peter Erskine

The folks over at All About Jazz have posted up a good mix of three Erskine clips.

Source: All About Jazz

The first clip shows Erskine playing a more-or-less free form drum solo. It was recorded in 2004 at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC). The second video, down below, features the drummer in a trio with guitarist John Abercrombie and bassist Marc Johnson, recorded at NYC’s Village Vanguard. Lastly, the third clip provides a glimpse of Erskine the teacher, as he demonstrates a New Orleans-style groove and solo.

Calling themselves the Percussion Patrol, the cookie-slingers get together every Sunday and sling grooves under the direction of Don Amig.  It’s about time they show those all-male corps that the gender gap swings both ways.

They are still accepting members, so if you’re a girl age 14-18 in the Allentown, PA area, call 610-349-7251 or e-mail percworx@ptd.net.

John Dolmayan Buys Rare Superman Comic

Remember a while back there was this big to-do about a rare, first edition Superman Comic that was for sale?  No?  Well it seems that it caught the attention of System of a Down drummer, John Dolmayan, who picked up the auctioned comic for a cool $317k.  The price paid in 1938 for the original?  10 Cents.

Turns out, Dolmayan is a pretty big rare comic dealer and bought the comic for a client.  Hmmm … maybe it’s Charlie Benante!

New Rock Band Featuring Beatles To Be Released

Finally! A Rock Band game worth mentioning! The Beatles music will be featured on The Beatles: Rock Band, to be released this fall! To me it seems as if putting their music on Rock Band would be beneath the Fab Four (or whomever holds their copyrights now). Apparently I am wrong! One wonders what Ringo could have to say about this…
