My kit smells of rich mahogany. Anchorman? Anyone? Anyways, Pearl really seems to be stepping up their game this year. Demon Drive, the jingle cajon, and now a stunning mahogany kit. I’m simply loving the look of this thing. Seriously. What else can I say? That’s a beautiful kit.

Pearl will be releasing a special, limited edition African mahogany 4 piece shell pack in 2009. The drums are 4 ply of African mahogany with maple reinforcement rings. The shells are finished in a beautiful red mahogany fade (#341).
Pearl’s supreme quality African mahogany gives these drums a vintage dark, warm, rich tone that separates itself from drums constructed of other materials.
The drums include a 22×18 bass drum, 10×8 and 12×9 toms and a 16×16 floor tom. All toms feature chrome super hoops, aluminum optimount tom holders and remo clear ambassador heads.
Only 30 of these limited edition kits will be available in the U.S.

First things first. This review would not have been possible without the guys at Fork's Drum Closet allowing me to occupy their practice room, tool around with a VERY expensive piece of equipment, and have access their wi-fi so I could do some background research on this pedal. They are supporting drummer-talk and the review monkey by allowing me review their gear so do me a favor and if my review is what convinces you ...

For the upcoming tour with his new supergroup, Chickenfoot, Chad Smith is pulling out all the stops. He's been known to go over the top in kit design before, a couple times. This time around is no exception. Smith's teamed up with Orange County Chopper motorcycle artist Nub. No... that's really his name. The kit looks pretty flippin' sweet. Not a bad design. Check it our here.

In a victory for drumming purists everywhere, Pearl has announced that 311's Chad Sexton has left his former company (Orange County Drums and Percussion) for greener pastures. Having endorsed Pearl's hardware for awhile, he finally saw the light and wisely left ODCP. No brainer to me. Go Chad!

In keeping with the recent sports trend, Pearl has announced they have reached a deal to be the official supplier of drums and percussion for the Pacific 10 Conference (Pac-10) men's and women's basketball tournaments. Read closely and you'll see that not all of the universities have agreed to use Pearl drum sets, just Pearl marching percussion. It looks like all the California schools (USC, UCLA, UC-Berkeley) might have other contracts they must honor. Interesting. ...

The good folks at Pearl have released another innovative piece of gear. I've seen guys use auxiliary percussion in a kit setting before. Former cast member Ian "The Whipping Boy" McClellan used a djembe as a snare with congas as his toms once. But this is taking it to another level. Doesn't look like the popcorn snare comes with it, but if you put all this together, you would definitely have a hip setup.

10″, 12″, 16″??? That’s a pretty big jump to the floor tom! No 14″x14″?

nice vintage shells….where are the vintage sizes? it should be 20×14 or 22×14…12×8 or 13×8……14×14 or 16×16
When will somebody get it right?
Is it good for Jazz?
I don’t see why not. It would depend on your head and tuning choice, but this could conceivably be used for jazz purposes.
I have this kit, Pearl Limited Edition Masters Premium Mahogany kit.. it is AMAZING, and the toms are 10×8, 12×9 and floor is 14×14.. 22×18 kick.. matching snare as well, 14×5.. GF found it was sexy and she admits to not even knowing what a snare is.. All african mahogany interior is like a purplish tint.. with maple strips around the bearing edges about an inch deep and 1/4 thick.. the best sounding kit in the store.. and I got it in the ultra rare gold hardware fusion edition.. good price too.. it lists at 3’399 USD with a 485 USD snare, so almost $4000.. I got it for $1500 brand new! Only 30 available in the US and 60 in Europe.. I give it a 10 out of 10!!! Its considered a “near-field” kit so its great for Miking and recording, and for practice in a room with your band.. just dont buy this kit for Gigging if you dont plan on miking it! It sounds great in small spaces since there’s not a lot of projection, it doesnt hurt the ears or make listeners uncomfortable by its loudness unless you really smack em.. Theres a snap and a huge bass tone out of every piece, INSANE kick sound, and the snare is a piccolo type size but sounds like a snare you’d want to record with! Perfect for ANY type of music, I love Black Metal to big band, and I spent 3 hours picking this kit out from Starclassics to Stage Customs to References.. TRY ONE IF YOU CAN! odds are you never will see one, unfortunatley! Its a kit you keep your whole life, like a grand piano.
