TRAPS Magazine Hangs It Up

February 23, 2009 in Books/Mags/Web, Education, Interviews, News by Carter

Sadly, the good people at TRAPS Magazine have decided to cease production of the magazine. The parent publication, DRUM!, will continue, but it looks like the TRAPS experiment can’t weather a tough economy. This is a shame. TRAPS was a fine publication that really set the bar for in-depth drumming/music journalism. We’ve given TRAPS the love on the show before and we will miss them.

TRAPS Magazine Suspends Publication
And Will Merge Subscribers With DRUM!

Enter Music Publishing, Inc. today announced that TRAPS magazine is merging with its sister publication, DRUM! TRAPS, published quarterly since 2007, has been widely hailed for its innovative editorial content, including book-length interviews, top writers and photographers, annotated transcriptions and a focus on jazz and rock drumming history. It will suspend publishing immediately. Current subscribers will receive DRUM! magazine subscriptions and be invited to join an upcoming TRAPS web community.

According to publisher Phil Hood, “In this recession it is imperative for us to focus our efforts our flagship product, DRUM! magazine. TRAPS is incredibly popular with its readership, but the downturn, particularly in advertising, makes it impossible for TRAPS to reach its goals in the near term. We are not immune to the forces impacting our advertisers and other publishers.”

TRAPS launched a test issue, featuring drumming great Max Roach on the cover in 2006. It published three issues in 2007, four in 2008 and one in 2009. Other cover stories featured John Bonham, Jack DeJohnette, Roy Haynes, Terry Bozzio, Lenny White, Jeff “Tain” Watts, and Steve Gadd.

“We learned a tremendous amount from the TRAPS experience,” says editor Andy Doerschuk, “and we want to incorporate some of that TRAPS approach in DRUM! as we go forward.”

The final issue of TRAPS, featuring Tony Williams, remains on sale until March.

Man, Drum! just loves giving it away!  They've just offered a free PDF download of the excellent Lenny White article from the Summer 08 issue of Traps. For fusion fans, the prospect of Return To Forever getting back together again after all these years (the group dis-banded in 1976) is akin to a Beatles reunion, and for the past few decades seemed about as unlikely. Corea was the lone holdout in recent years. While Clarke, Di ...

Today we cover one of the pillars of drum grooves, and one of my personal favorites - "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" from Paul Simon's album, Still Crazy After All These Years.  You can't throw a rock into a room full of drummers and not hit one who has not at least heard of this groove.   Not only is the "50 Ways" groove smooth, and laid back, but it's deceptively simple.  Mr. Gadd ...

Sometimes it can be difficult to picture our drumming heros playing outside of their "comfort zone," so to speak, so it's refreshing when they step out of themselves and let loose a bit.  We're so used to Jojo Mayer being eternally precise and accurate, but in this video he's slappin' them skins Bonham style! NOTE: Please watch this for the drumming only because, dear Lord, the vocalist is awful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=as8YyFsGMQs

We've always known that hip-hop owes a lot to jazz in terms of style and feel, but to hear a rap artist directly discuss his jazz influence is a great thing!  Jazz Times just posted a great interview with Fab 5 Freddy where the rapper talks about Max Roach's influence on his music. One day Max came to visit my dad and asked what I’m into and my dad said ‘oh, he’s into some rapping thing.’ ...

Steve Gadd: In Session should win some kind of prize for honesty and plainspokenness in the category of drum instructional videos over thirty years in age, because that's all you get with In Session. That's not a bad thing, but if you were expecting something that isn't "Steve Gadd giving session advice from in session interviews and ...

There was a time in Terry Bozzio's history where he wasn't the king of huge drumsets... he was king of big hair. This video is a record of how he approached his drum solos at that time. His solos back then are very similar to his solos these days but he used a much smaller kit back then, only five toms a snare and two bass drums... tiny. His solos are long orchestral inspired pieces that I ...
