This week on Drummer Talk, we talk about unlocking the HH with various Hi Hat techniques. Jeff Porcaro is the Drummer of the week and the Deviled Egg is the hybrid rudiment of the week! Show Notes
It’s audition day here at Visible School, so it’s my hope to be tracking Drummer Talk by 4pm Central time. No guarantees, but just a heads up for you folks who tune in live.
My kit smells of rich mahogany. Anchorman? Anyone? Anyways, Pearl really seems to be stepping up their game this year. Demon Drive, the jingle cajon, and now a stunning mahogany kit. I’m simply loving the look of this thing. Seriously. What else can I say? That’s a beautiful kit.
In keeping with the time honored tradition of taping things and then selling a DVD of said things to people… Hudson Music has released the DVD of last year’s Modern Drummer Festival. Way to go guys.
Sadly, the good people at TRAPS Magazine have decided to cease production of the magazine. The parent publication, DRUM!, will continue, but it looks like the TRAPS experiment can’t weather a tough economy. This is a shame. TRAPS was a fine publication that really set the bar for in-depth drumming/music journalism. We’ve given TRAPS the love on the show before and we will miss them.
Today we talk all about the different types and uses of effects cymbals. Also, we have a tribute to the late, great Louis Bellson. The Flam-Flam is the rudiment of the week. Show Notes
I’m now realizing that I should have done this one a loooooong time ago. Tommy Igoe’s Groove Essentials DVD was originally a poster. Yup, a single sheet of paper. This humble piece of paper was destined for bigger things then anyone could have expected. Eventually the fans of the poster screamed for a film adaptation of the runaway hit! That call was answered and things have gotten plain old ridiculous from there. (more…)
Dave Weckl, noted studio drummer and clinic extraordinaire, is offering himself as drummer/producer/engineer on his website. He has a complete Pro Tools HD3 rig, mic’d up kit, and iso room in his garage! Personally, I’m frothing with jealousy. It’s one of my dreams to have a working home studio. Looks like I should take some notes! Check out the video and photos on his site. Pretty sweet!
Taye, in an ever-increasing effort to make a bigger splash in the drum market, has released two new pedals. Nothing special at first glance, however, I’m a big fan of Taye and I think the company will continue to get better and better as the years go on.
Sad news for Red Hot Chili Pepper fans. Musicradar.com’s recent interview with Chili Pepper’s drummer Chad Smith tells that the band currently has no timetable for returning to the rehearsal room, studio, tour circuit, or the same room together. Pretty interesting read.
We regret to announce the unexpected passing of Louie Bellson on February 14, 2009.

One of the world’s greatest drummers, Louie Bellson has been an exciting crowd pleaser for over 60 years. A well-respected educator and one of the nicest people in the music business, the still-active Louie Bellson is a class act.
Born Luigi Paolino Balassoni, Bellson won a nationwide Gene Krupa drum contest in 1940 and was heard by Tommy Dorsey, who was quite impressed. The drummer started at the top in 1941, playing with Benny Goodman; after serving in the military, he worked with the big bands of Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, and Harry James. His trademark was using two bass drums in his set. From the start, Bellson was able to construct fascinating solos that could hold one’s interest for as long as 15 minutes, yet he also enjoyed playing quietly with combos.
In their never-ceasing effort to build up their drumstick line, Zildjian has announced three new artist series sticks: Ronald Bruner Jr (Stanley Clarke), John Blackwell (Justin Timberlake), and Ronnie Vannucci (The Killers). These three names will undoubtably boost Zildjian’s street cred for their sticks, not that they needed it. What I think it interesting is the fact that Bruner, who endorses Sabian, uses Zildjian drumsticks. Just seems like an interesting wrinkle in the situation. I wonder if he’ll switch cymbal companies sometime soon…
We are on our annual Winter Retreat here at VISIBLE SCHOOL, so please enjoy this show from the archives! This show originally aired Jan 16, 2006.

We finally finish part 2 of Custom Drums from A-Z(ed) with Bryan Rumfola. Plus we talk all about bass drum drum head choices and the many options for you and the Pearl Reference reference returns. Oh, and Steve Gadd swings by for a visit!! (P.S. I know the sound is a little peak-ish on this episode and the background music is a bit loud but please bear with us. It was a crazy sound night last night.)
Thought I’d share one of my favorite videos with you all today. This one’s of Benny Greb groovin’ away in his studio. I love the simplicity of these clips. Just a couple of mics and a drumset. Something beautifully perfect about that. Enjoy!
