Looks like an interesting debut from a smaller Keller company. Looks like these guys went through extensive R&D on this stuff relating to the sizes of the drums and the corresponding sounds. This better pay off, cause it’s tough getting strangely shaped drums to sound good, in my opinion.

Looks like gospel drumming is everywhere we turn these days. After a wonderful night at the Teddy Campbell clinic at Memphis Drum Shop Tuesday (review coming on this week’s show), looks like today that Vater has released several models of gospel sticks. Not sure how these sticks are customized for gospel drumming. The finish looks like the same from the Zildjian Travis Barker signatures, which I recall despising. We’ll have to try some out and see. Comment away if you’ve tried out the sticks. Let us know what you think!

Found this in this morning’s USA Today. Apparently we might all be born with music engrained in us. Thought this was too interesting not to share with everyone. Enjoy!

Jazz and studio great Billy Ward (Friend of the Podcast) has gifted us with some excellent tapes of his band rehearsing for this past Modern Drummer Festival as well as some videos of the band playing a gig in New York’s The Cutting Room prior to the MD Fest. Pretty great stuff. He’s also made charts of the songs available. Very cool.
Looks like Billy’s set up a “Pay For It What You Will” system a la Radiohead. They’re available for free but you can pay for them if you want. Billy’s a great guy. Go ahead and support him. Links to the downloads as well as Billy’s thoughts from his site are available after the jump.

All About Jazz: Let’s start with what everybody wants to know. How did you get the nickname “Tain”?
Jeff “Tain” Watts: Oh, Lord [laughing]. [Pianist] Kenny Kirkland gave me the name. I was playing with Wynton around 1983 and we were driving from West Palm Beach to Miami and Kenny passed a gas station called Chieftain Gas with a symbol of an Indian with a headdress and he said, “Chief Tain, you’re going to be Jeff ‘Tain,’” and I said, “No I’m not,” but then I could not avoid it.

This book looks interesting. It’s a history of rhythm from the Middle East, specifically Iraq. Looks well researched. I think it’s it’s an interesting take on the whole thing. With all the stuff going on over there, it’s easy to forget that this is a country that has rich musical heritage. Definitely worth a gander.

Looks like Meinl is introducing an entry level line of cymbals made of B8. Personally, I’m on the fence about Meinl. They make some good stuff, but then again anything below their Byzance line sounds like B8 in the first place to my ears. Good to see they’re expanding their line-up, though.

Studio great Russ Miller (friend of the podcast) and Hudson Music have released Miller’s new DVD, “Arrival: Behind the Glass.” Seems like it’s part instructional DVD, part performance DVD. Russ is a great guy and phenomenal player. Check out Dave’s interview with Russ on the 1.19.07 podcast.

More from Pearl’s showcase at NAMM in Anaheim, CA. They’ve released a Jingle Cajon as part of their onslaught of gear. Looks pretty interesting to me. I like how this instrument sounds in my head. Looking forward to getting my hands on one. Cool video at Pearl’s website.

Looks like ZIldjian has expanded their new A Custom Rezo line at NAMM this year with seven new models. I personally haven’t tried these out, but I’m very interested to hear how the blended lathing sounds.
