Brain talks new GnR Record

Source: Undercover.com.au

The long awaited Guns ‘n Roses album has taken 15 years to be released. It will finally see the light of day in November.  Drummer Brain has revealed to EQTV how more than $300,000 was spent over a 7 month period on redoing the drum bits note for note after Josh Freese left the band and how he now has the record for the duration that a single drum kit had been set-up in a studio.

“I think I have the record for how long drums were set-up in a studio and I think it was five years that my drums were set-up at the Village Recorders in Los Angeles,” Brain said. “It was five years and it went through three different producers. It went through Sean Beaven, Roy Thomas Baker and then I guess Axl is the producer now. Five years my drums were set-up.

Ludwig and their Tattooed Kit

Source: Harmony Central

As “the most famous name on drums” moves into its 100th Anniversary in 2009, Ludwig Drum proudly announces the limited collaboration Ludwig Corey Miller Signature Element Drum Kit. These special edition inaugural kits will only be available for a short time at select Ludwig dealers, and have a sound that is as dangerous as their look.

These drums feature the flash of world-renowned tattoo artist Corey Miller who is a true representation of the relationship tattoos have with Rock and Roll. Having entered the world of tattooing as a 15-year -old hoodlum punk rock drummer, Corey began his professional tattoo career at age 20 at Fat George’s Tattoo Gallery in LaPuente, California. Taking cues from famed artists such as Jack Rudy, Filip Leu and Suzanne Fauser, Corey’s stunningly realistic tattoo art have taken him all over the world, and made him one of the most sought-after purveyors of ink in modern times.

Ringo Says No More Fan Mail

Source: AP

Ringo Starr doesn’t want to hear from you. If you do write, your letter will end up in the trash. After 45 years of stardom, he doesn’t want to spend any more time answering mail or sending signed photos back to fans.

The fan fatigue led the former Beatles drummer to post a sometimes angry sounding short video clip on his Web site telling fans that any mail sent to him after Oct. 20 will not be read or answered. British television stations broadcast the video on Tuesday.

DVD Review – Antonio Sanchez: Master Series

Antonio Sanchez, drummer for Pat Metheny does a master class and you get to be there even if you weren’t there!

That’s pretty much how all the Hudson Music Master Series products work. They film someone doing a master class and add some of their masterful camera work and other little things that are specific to the DVD. Some of those things include a foot cam and onscreen text that highlights some of the points that Antonio hits on. (more…)

Drummer Talk Archives – Pearl Reference Drums/Steve Gadd Clinic

This show originally was originally posted August 25, 2005.  What’s hysterical is how from the very beginning I was trying to get these guys to lean closer to the mics.  Anyway, it’s cool to see how much the show has changed, but also how much it’s remained completely the same …

————–

Our first studio show of Dave Kropf’s Drummer Talk. Features Dave, Shane Flynn, Wes Melton, Ian McClellan, and DJ Kirk engineering. We talk about Pearl’s Reference Series drums, Steve Gadd’s clinic tour, and getting into the music scene. Plus, beat up Pink Floyd Shirts.

Correction: On today’s show, I said that Chester Thompson played Pearl. This is incorrect, Chester Thompson is a DW endorser. My apologies.

Tama’s Soul Toul Snare Drum

What .. “Toul”?  What exactly is Toul?  Turns out, Soul Toul is one of Japan’s top drummers.

Source: Tama

For a long time, I have wanted to produce a snare drum with a great sound and an affordable price,” says Soul. Soul’s impressive drumming career has spanned genres including rock, pop, jazz, and wind orchestra. He is one of the most famous and highly respected drummers in Japan, and a huge influence on drummers throughout the country. He said that in his over 30-years as a professional drummer, he noticed the importance for young drummers to be able to get quality equipment at a price they could afford. So TAMA and Soul conducted a lot of research and trials in an attempt to fulfill his wish. And finally, we have developed the new “Customized Bearing Edge.” With this breakthrough development, the Soul Toul snare drum offers solid, warm tones and rich expressiveness.

DVD Reveiw – Dave Weckl: How To Develop Your Own Sound

JABB here with the review of the third part of the Dave Weckl: A Natural Evolution series of videos.

Dave Weckl’s last offering to the drumming populace is all about getting your sound out of the drums. It’s also probably the most valuable DVD in the series because he gets pretty in-depth into mics and EQ, a subjects most drummers (myself included) are pretty ignorant about. This isn’t a video about your touch on the instrument, rather it’s about how you tune, mic and EQ your drum-set.

The video starts off with a section on tuning your drums. Dave covers the different head types and gives a very basic out line of their sound qualities. Dave is a Remo endorsee so he talks about ambassadors and emperors and such because that’s the Remo line of products. He then show’s you how he tunes his drums on a tom tom from his kit. The problem I have with this is that tuning a tom-tom is a different process from tuning a bass drum or a snare drum. (more…)
