A funny thing happened when Barker posted a video of himself on YouTube in September drumming thunderously in time with Southern rapper Soulja Boy’s smash hit single “Crank That (Soulja Boy).” Almost immediately, it began to spread virally among hip-hop heads. Fast-forward a year: The clip has been streamed a whopping 17.5 million times, and no one is more surprised than Barker, who says he put it online as a means to a much simpler end.

“You might have heard some of my remixes but never known it was me,” he said one blindingly hot afternoon at his North Hollywood recording studio. “I thought, ‘If I want my remixes to be popular, if I want people to even know I’m doing them, maybe I should use YouTube.’ I never thought we’d get as many views as we did. I was tripping!”

Muse have had an extraordinarily busy few years in support of hit album Black Holes and Revelations, but drummer Dom Howard has revealed to BBC 6 Music that the band will start work on the follow-up next month.

Howard said: “We just did the V Festival and the one in Stafford was our last gig so we’re kind of done now with the ‘Black Holes & Revelations’ album tour, which has been almost two and a half years, which is a long time. We’re working on new stuff and we’re gonna have a couple of weeks off and then in about two weeks time we’re back out to Italy to start writing again. We’ve already done a few tracks and it sounds great so we’re just working to the future.”

Jason Bonham talks new Zep

Much to the delight of Led Zeppelin fans everywhere, Bonham revealed that he’s been meeting up with Led Zep guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones in recent months and that they’ve been “trying to do some new material and writing.”

It was the first time since Led Zeppelin announced they would re-form for a single performance (which happened late last year at London’s O2 Arena, in honor of the late Ahmet Ertegün, who signed the band to Atlantic Records in 1969) that anyone connected to the band has confirmed publicly that new music could be on the horizon for the iconic rockers.

Another drummer gets on the gaming bandwagon

August 24, 2008 in Artists, Randomness by Dave Kropf

We’ve been bringing reports about drummers getting involved with various upcoming music video game releases (Mike Portnoy, Chad Smith, Travis Barker), now it looks like Metallica slugger, Lars Ulrich, is seeing the advantage of this new medium.

Harmonix’s Rock Band can often serve as a sort of subliminal radio station. After being forced to play through the song Cherub Rock five times before finally passing it on expert mode, you might just become the newest Pumpkins fan. Enough Fall Out Boy, and you may find yourself tracking down their discography–much to your dismay.

Needless to say, the record companies couldn’t be happier.

“A few weeks ago, when [Guitar Hero: Aerosmith] came out, there was more than a 40 percent increase in their catalog sales,” said Billboard analyst Geoff Mayfield to CNN.

“I expect you’ll see that again when Metallica gets the same kind of treatment in a few weeks,” he added.

As a result, even Lars “Napster Baaaad” Ulrich, Metallica drummer, is getting into the spirit of Guitar Hero.

“It’s a cool generational thing to share that with your kids,” said Ulrich. “My [son's] favorite bands are.. the same bands that are my favorite bands–the bands I grew up on.”

Despite the obvious reason behind Ulrich’s enthusiasm–Metallica songs sold on Rock Band and Guitar Hero III are lining his pockets by the download–it’s hard to argue with his sentiment.
