Modern Drummer’s Undiscovered Drummer Contest is Back

March 7, 2008 in Books/Mags/Web, News by Dave Kropf

Modern Drummer is now taking submissions for this year’s Undiscovered Drummer contest. The winners of both age categories (18 & under, and 19+) will get $1000 cash and a full write up in Modern Drummer magazine. Previous winners have been immortalized in the Modern Drummer Festival DVDs, but will that continue for this year? MD hasn’t announced yet, but they have guaranteed “an attractive plaque commemorating your victory.” Whee, a plaque! It can go right next to my Little League “You’re a Participant” trophy.

New for this year, you can submit your entries on YouTube (ala Heinz’s commercial contest)! A couple have already cropped up but I’m sure there will be 100′s more. We’ll keep an eye on them and report on any that are either very amazing, or very very awful.

Sign Meshuggah drummer Tomas Haake for a pro sports contract. He can't stay healthy! The Swedish band announced this month that they are cancelling several Scandinavian shows due Haake's unhealthy back and right leg. Haake was forced to sit out part of Meshuggah's tour last year due to shoulder problems. At this point, one wonders why this keeps happening. Suppose it's due to poor posture or technique? It is possible. Perhaps he's just chronically injured. ...

Not to be outdone by Drum! Magazine's digital archives, Drumhead Magazine is now offering their own online versions.  The more this goes on, the more MD's archive DVD seems overpriced and arcane. The presentation is pretty solid, but compared to Drum's offering, this new entry lacks some of the pizzazz and slickness.  It's ok, but Drum!'s is better.
