DVD review – Gregg Bissonette’s Musical Drumming in Different Styles

February 14, 2008 in Artists, Education, Music/DVDs, Reviews by JABB

PhotobucketGregg Bissonette, studio drummer and nice guy extraordinaire stars in this guide to musical drumming in different styles! Gregg has been drumming with all kinds of different acts for a long time. So naturally he’s had to be able to play whatever they ask of him. In this dvd, Gregg gives his take on playing music in different areas of music. Each style corresponds to an original track from one of his solo albums. He’s got a funky tune, (Marbles) a jazzy tune, (Lum-Lum) two different rock tunes (Submarine & Train to Willoughby) and one song solely for its use of odd times (Noah’s Ark.) 7 of the 8 tracks come from his “Submarine” album. The final track, “Tribute to Tony” comes his self-titled album.

I gotta say that Gregg is probably one of the best speakers out of all of Hudson Music’s dvds. He’s energetic, funny, got tons of stories and he obviously used to teaching to groups and a in a one-on-one setting. He’s also got such a raspy/hoarse voice you’ll wonder if he was the victim of botched throat surgery. Odd talking aside, keeps it entertaining and is very good at getting his point across. Not unlike Mike Portnoy’s dvds, he goes from track to track and breaks down some of the more intricate licks and ideas used in the song. Gregg goes further than that though. As this is a dvd about drumming in different styles, he also gives his thoughts about whatever style of music the track he’s dissecting happens to be. He rabbit trails a little bit, but in a good way. It almost always leads to useful tip or lesson of some kind and he gets back on track almost immediately so its all good in the hood.

One of the cool things is that he talks about stuff that, while not directly related to drumming, is stuff that we can all use. For example he talks about auditioning for a gig and stuff you want to do when you’ve got the gig. He also covers drummer health with sections on warming up, cooling down, and protecting your ears. Lots of basic stuff that goes ignored because it’s assumed that everyone already knows this stuff. Well, turns out allot of us don’t know this stuff. Good thing he goes over it.

One of the best things about this dvd is that its got a pdf transcription for every single exercise or lick worthy of notice. Just load em’ to your hard drive and you’re good to go. There is a little bonus footage that includes; a gear tour, a segment on warming up, and a plug for his cd… though that last one really shouldn’t merit it’s own space on the special features menu. That’s about all that you get. Normally this is where I’d gripe about the lack of extras; or there being to much random crap in the main feature; or there not being enough random crap in the main feature; or the mismanaged placement of random crap in the otherwise solid main feature. I will admit that this dvd is light in the extra features… but I don’t miss them. The main feature is just so well done that it eliminates any real need for bonus footage. I don’t think I’ve ever run into another dvd that pulled this feat off.

I’m sitting here thinking about what I don’t like about this dvd and I’m coming up empty. The only possible thing that I can come up with is that he might be slightly too talky for some people, but I kinda like it so I can’t count that against him. It’s one of the best conventional drum instructional out there. Especially when you consider it’s aim is to help people be more musical drummers. Not to be ipecac for drum vomiters.

It earns 5 of 5 stars… The first Hudson Music dvd i’ve reviewed to do so.

5 Mics

So next time you’ve got nothing better to do with 50 some odd dollars… go pick this one up.

Hola! Yeah, I know it has been a while but now I'm back! To make up for slacking I'm doing a trio of videos to make up for lost time. The three videos come from a new series of instructional videos I discovered on Netflix. A Los Angeles based company called IMV has flooded Netflix with its line of "Behind the Player" (BTP) DVDs. They have videos for guitarists, bassists, and drummers and they feature mostly artists ...

I've been excited to see this one for a while. I was waiting for the promised Blu-Ray version to come out so I could see if the instructional experience is that much better in HD. Alas, my patience expired when I saw it available on Netflix. I saw the preview for this DVD and thought "that guy sounds like a more progressive version of Steve Smith... and I like that." As it turns out Todd Sucherman: ...

This review might be a little nontraditional but you'll have to forgive me because this DVD is quite nontraditional. It's one of those most rare of animals, the drum and bass instructional video. Carter Beauford, (drummer for DMB) and Victor Wooten, (bassist for Béla Fleck and the Flecktones), decided to turn the recording session for Victor's album Yin-Yang into the foundation for an entire drum/bass instructional DVD. This isn't two separate instructional DVDs that Hudson Music ...

If there's any drummer who can claim they've come from the rock and roll jungle it's Matt Sorum. With seven years under his belt, he's the longest sitting Guns N' Roses drummer ever. Matt Sorum was ejected from the band by Axl Rose after he defended Slash's decision to leave. So along with Slash and former Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan they formed Velvet Revolver... which is now on hiatus because their lead singer ...

Coordination & Groove is a video that is pretty much honest about its content. It's a video about coordination and groove, in that order IMO. Alan Schechner (the host) is another one of those working drummers. The kind that we'll probably end up like if we pursue the working drummer career path. Not famous, but then again... who needs fame if you have a job making music with the instrument of your choice? He's also ...

I'm gonna be totally honest and say I had never heard of Randy Van Patten before I rented this DVD and I have a feeling you might not know who he is either. He's a working drummer with a lots of years under his belt and has drummed for lots of people in his time. In other words he's the kind of drummer we aspire to be like but didn't realize it when we ...

I've just been striking out with a vengeance on my recent Netflix picks for drum reviews and  this is strike 3... good thing I'm not playing baseball. Mike Terrana's Rhythm Beast is very similar to Ian Paice's DVD that I reviewed previously in that there was some confusion as to what I was getting into when I read the description. The description led me to believe that this was a performance/instruction just like the description of Ian Paice's DVD led me to believe it was a ...

So while searching for a story for today, I stumbled across the Hudson Music Youtube channel and found a whole channel for Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials 2 DVD. This particular clip popped out to me. It's about rideless grooves and how to use them. I found it incredibly useful. Same ole Tommy. However, I noticed he's using Evans heads now where he was using Remo before. Enjoy!        John Blackwell is the third in the HMMS (Hudson Music Master Series) line-up and unfortunately it's much the same as his first DVD. Like I said last time, John Blackwell is one of the best drummers of his kind today, but he is not a good teacher or clinician. It pains me to say this but if you watched his first DVD then you pretty much have already seen this DVD. This DVD has more ...

Akira Jimbo has probably gone farther than any other drummer down the path of cross breeding acoustic and electronics. Anyone who's tooled around his drummerworld.com page for a little while knows what i'm talking about. He's not playing to a track or over a loop (though he does use ...
