Drummer Talk 09/15/2005 – World’s Fastest Drummer, Clinics, Memphis Drum Shop

The second real show features Dave, Ian Mac, and Bryan Rumfola. In this episode we discuss New Orleans, World’s Fastest Drummer, clinics and the Memphis Drum Shop, and entry level kits.

CORRECTION: In this week’s podcast, I mentioned that Paiste was a Finnish company when in fact, it is a Swiss company. Man, I was WAY off!! Thanks, Simon, for the heads up! :^)

  1. Hey Dave,
I’m Kevin. And just wanted to let you know that your great and I look forward to all your upcoming episodes. Been lookin for some drum talk.
And I have one question Have you heard of the new Duallist Triple Kick Pedal and is it worth the $600 Bucks.

    Thanks Dave,
    Your Listener

  2. Thanks for the feedback. I’ll look into that Duallist pedal.

  3. Hey

I know chu aint a guitarist of sorts… so

I was listening to you drumcast feat. Bryan and Ian, you mentioned Epiphone being started by Gibson, which is not true. Epiphone was started by a man named Anastasios Stathopoulo in 1873, but was originally known as the House of Stathopoulo, but was changed to Epiphone in 1923 by his son, Epi Stathopoulo. It was bought by Conn in 1953, then bought by Gibson in 1957. Then in 1969, they moved production of epiphone to korea. After that quality started decreasing. But i must admit, Epiphone products have been coming back as quality products.

    Anyways… brief history… enjoy… I enjoy your drummer podcast… haha…. but im a drummer wanna be :-)

  4. LOL! I’m just a bevvy of misinformation today, man. Thanks’ for the history lesson. I was sure, though, that I heard the Epiphone story from a person that works at Gibson. Hmm …

  5. Dave: There is no such thing as a drum luthier. A luthier only makes stringed instruments. How about just ‘drum maker.’ But enough of that…

I was thinking…could you guys devote some time to drummers-health related issues? As an example…back in 1996, after playing for about 12 years, I started to develop really bad tendonitis in both elbows. Part of this was due to somewhat bad form from being self-taught, but I realized that much of it was actually from playing Hot Stick and Lightning Rods everyday, and compensating for the muted sound. (I generally don’t play very loud or hard. In fact, I normally use Pro-Mark 747 hickory sticks or even 727’s oak or hickory and Remo Pinstripes, neither of which are “heavy duty” but which tend to last a long, long time for me. (I haven’t broken sticks or heads in years, so I end up just tossing them out and replacing because they are simply worn out and have lost tone.)

Recently, I’ve noticed (actually, our singer noticed,) that I slouch while playing, and as an old guy, this is bad for the back. We ended up doing some yoga during practice because my back was hurting so much. Anyway, enough rambling-you get the picture.

Please touch on some things to watch out for, and/or to do before or after playing to prevent/alleviate injuries or discomfort. The botom line is: repetative, jarring motion is not good for the body, but drumming is good for the soul. There’s the rub!

Thanks, and keep up the good work! -Mark G. (drummer for Bullet Daze http://www.bulletdaze.com)

  6. yeah, I figured “luthier” didn’t really apply .. but sure sounds fancy! Why is it guitar makers get their own über-hip french word, but drum makers don’t?!

    REBELLION IS AT HAND!!!

*Ahem* .. anyway, those are good topic ideas! I’ll add them to the tally of listener submitted topics!
