Drummer Talk 08/25/2005 – Pearl Reference Drums/Steve Gadd Clinic
August 23, 2005 in Artists, Gear, Musicianship, Podcast, Reviews by Dave Kropf
Our first studio show of Dave Kropf’s Drummer Talk. Features Dave, Shane Flynn, Wes Melton, Ian McClellan, and DJ Kirk engineering. We talk about Pearl’s Reference Series drums, Steve Gadd’s clinic tour, and getting into the music scene. Plus, beat up Pink Floyd Shirts.
Correction: On today’s show, I said that Chester Thompson played Pearl. This is incorrect, Chester Thompson is a DW endorser. My apologies.

Today we cover one of the pillars of drum grooves, and one of my personal favorites - "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" from Paul Simon's album, Still Crazy After All These Years. You can't throw a rock into a room full of drummers and not hit one who has not at least heard of this groove. Not only is the "50 Ways" groove smooth, and laid back, but it's deceptively simple. Mr. Gadd ...

READ MORESteve Gadd: In Session should win some kind of prize for honesty and plainspokenness in the category of drum instructional videos over thirty years in age, because that's all you get with In Session. READ MORESadly, the good people at TRAPS Magazine have decided to cease production of the magazine. The parent publication, DRUM!, will continue, but it looks like the TRAPS experiment can't weather a tough economy. This is a shame. TRAPS was a fine publication that really set the bar for in-depth drumming/music journalism. We've given TRAPS the love on the show before and we will miss them.

Hey Dave,
I was excited to find your podcast. I played drums and symphonic percussion professionally for 12 years in eastern Canada and New England. I do commercial photography now but still play as much as possible. I do a Podcast as well. It’s called The Zedcast (’cause Canadians say Zed) http://www.Zedcast.com I do some music talk but mostly it’s a variety show. Check it out if you get the chance.
In the mean time I’m totally subscribed to Drummer Talk and you’ve got my vote at Podcast Alley! The content was great: Moby Dick! 50 Ways! Oh Yeah! The round-table format worked great, and the audio quality is right on! Props to Kirk [Kleansound] Smith (I didn’t hear the phone cast)
Rock on guys! – Bruce Murray, Zedcast@GMail.com
Bruce, thanks for the encouragement and the vote on Podcast Alley! I’ll definitely check out Zedcast.
Dave,
I am brand new to Podcasts and yours was one of four new podcasts I subscribed to. I am 19 years old and have been playing drums since I was about 12 years old. Recently with school I have found myself short on time to play but your show def. lit a spark for me. My first thoughts when seeing your podcast listed was this is going to be boring but it was very interesting and kept my attention the whole time! Very professional as well! The humor was great as well. Keep them coming, I can assure you I will be listening and I will tell all my drummer and musician friends about the show. Thanks for such a great idea. Peace -Wes-
Thanks for the great feedback, Wes! We will be doing another studio show next week.
Dave,
I’m a drummer/teacher/composer in Atlanta, GA. I enjoyed your first podcast immensely! Very entertaining while on my morning 2-mile walk (got to keep in shape to play those tubs!). At first I thought it was just going to be a bunch of drummers sitting around talking about which drums/cymbals/sticks are the cooooolest(!), but it was both entertaining and informative (I play Pearl drums and I didn’t know any details about the Reference series until listening to your show).
Keep up the good work and keep those podcasts coming! I’m going to hip all my students to it, as well.
Terry
Terry, you are a healthy inspiration to all drummers!! Thanks so much for the kind words.
Dave,
Just wanted to say I enjoyed your pod cast on the Pearl Ref. series drums. I’ve always liked the sound of Pearl drums pretty well, I’m just not that crazy about Pearls tom arms for their kits. They can be pretty cumbersome. Anyway, the real reason I wrote was to ask a question about the Ref. series. I’ve never seen a set of these in person, and I was just wandering does this kit compare as far as weight goes to Premiers Signia model drums?
If you get a chance get back with me on this.
Thanks.
God bless
Mark
There has been such a tremendous response to the Dave Kropf’s Drummer Talk that we have developed a way for you to re-live Drum Talk in your very own home. HOW you may ask? Well, by the NEW!!! Dave Kropf Drummer Talk Action Figures. That’s right re-live your favorite moments with Dave, Shane, Wes, Ian, and lets not forget DJ Kirk. Spend hours talking drum with you favorite characters. Dave comes with his very own box of Fruity Mentos to chew on in the microphone. Shane come with life like fraises saying, “Ian, I’m still waiting for the answer to my question!” and “Get me a root beer float!” Ian comes with his very own pre-faided Pink Floyd t-shirt and DJ Kirk and Wes….. Well…..they come together as a special 2 for one deal! So act now while supplies last because if you don’t you’ll never forgive yourself for not getting these timeless collectors items.
OK, OK, OK….. It’s not true BUUUUUT if you had no idea what I was talking about, and didn’t get the humor, you need to listen to the podcast of Dave Kropf’s Drummer Talk. Made F.D.B.D.A.K. For Drummers By Drummers…. And Kirk. SO, check it out and enjoy!
Hey Dave (and crew). I’ve had an iPod for awhile now, and didn’t want to supplant all the songs I’ve painstakingly loaded into it. (Manually, didn’t want to go for the automatic sync.) Anyway, I finally got sick of 1000 songs and decided to get into podcasting. You guys were one of three I’ve subscribed to. Good stuff. It was great to listen to you in the car on the way to work. Can’t wait for the next installment.
