Dave’s Handy Tip O’ the Day.
Everyone should have business cards. I mean, everyone. If you’re at all interested in promoting yourself or getting work/gigs, then it behooves (what a strange word, btw) you to have a business card handy. Why get them, you may ask? Well the reasons are many, but I shall just ponder on the few that have the most impact.
1) You never know when you’re going to run into someone who is looking for help (in this case a drummer). You could be in line at Circle K or at a concert or simply picking your nose in your car at the drive through at Taco Bell (Admit it! You do it!!!), and BAM! Suddenly you start talking about music, gear, whatever and you mention you’re a musician. What’s that?? They know a guy who knows a guy who dated a girl who looked like this guy who knew that someone they ran into in the next urinal was looking for someone who thought they looked like this girl who laughed like this guy who was wanting to hire a person who saw the same movie as this guy who needed a drummer. Whoa!! What will you do if you don’t have a business card on you. Ok .. next
2) Having your own business card is not only convenient (see point #1), it is infinitly more professional than scratching your name out onto the nearest piece of paper or tissue or napkin or leaf that you can find. They ask, “can I get your number” and you’re all BOOM! Whoopah and bust out the card. They’re thinking, “man, this dude’s got it going on!!” They don’t lose your card because it doesn’t resemble pocket lint and call you for the gig. Easy peasy one two threesy.
3) Business cards are just stinkin’ cool. If you’ve never had your own name on a 2″x3.5″ piece of 80# card stock, then you don’t understand the euphoria of having your own cards. There’s just something intangible about looking onto this tiny little communucation device and knowing that you’re the ONLY person in the world who can use this card. This card is yours. It is YOU. It is an open dorway into gigs, relationship, networking, and more.
4) “Waaaaaaaaahh!! They’re too expensive!!!” But wait, here’s the coolest part. They’re not EVEN expensive. Providing you don’t want 7 different colors on a paperstock only available twice a century due to the bicentennial natural purging of the Brazilian rainforest, then you’re only gonna be set back $15-$20 for 1000 cards. Sure, they’re plain black ink on white paper, but in reality that just doesn’t matter. I hate to break it to you, but über-cool business cards are not required. In fact, the simpler the better. A simple card says “I don’t need to have a fancy card to define my qualities.” Ok, that may be over-generalizing, but you follow my point. Some of the hippest cards I’ve ever seen were merely Name and Phone number centered on a white card. BRILLIANT!!!
So do yourself a favor, and get your own cards. You won’t regret it and you’ll only be out $15. Heck, you probably spend that on lunch!!!
